Tesla Takes Action: Over Two Million Cars Recalled in the US Due to Autopilot Concerns

Elon Musk’s company has undergone an investigation for a duration exceeding two years regarding a sequence of crashes, including some fatal incidents, that occurred during the utilization of the Autopilot system.

Tesla is initiating a recall of over two million vehicles in the United States due to concerns regarding its Autopilot advanced driver-assistance system. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has expressed that the system’s approach to ensuring driver attentiveness may be insufficient, potentially resulting in the “predictable misuse of the system.”

For over two years, the NHTSA has been conducting an investigation into Elon Musk’s company due to a series of crashes, including some fatal ones, that occurred while the Autopilot system was engaged.

According to Tesla, the software controls of Autopilot may not offer adequate measures to prevent driver misuse, potentially elevating the likelihood of an accident.

Tesla’s Autopilot feature is designed to enable vehicles to autonomously steer, accelerate, and brake within their designated path. However, the enhanced Autopilot can only assist in lane changes on highways and does not render the vehicles fully autonomous.

Autosteer is one of the components of the Autopilot system, designed to maintain a specific speed or distance from other vehicles and ensure that the vehicle stays within its designated lane. Tesla has expressed its disagreement with the analysis conducted by the NHTSA. However, the company has announced its plans to release a software update via over-the-air technology.

This update will incorporate extra controls and alerts to further encourage drivers to fulfill their continuous driving responsibility whenever Autosteer is activated. The update will involve enhancing the visibility of visual alerts on the user interface, simplifying the process of engaging and disengaging Autosteer, and implementing additional checks when activating Autosteer.

Tesla also stated that the update would, in due course, disable Autosteer for drivers who fail to consistently exhibit responsible driving behavior while the feature is active. The recall encompasses the Y, S, 3, and X models manufactured from October 5, 2012, to December 7 of this year.

Certain affected vehicles were scheduled to receive the update on Tuesday, while the rest would receive it at a later time. The NHTSA will continue to keep its investigation into Autopilot open, monitoring the effectiveness of Tesla’s solutions, according to the agency.
