Karan Johar recalled how he had lied to his mother about attending Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra’s secret wedding in April 2014, abandoning the release of his film 2 States. With his movie starring Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor about to premiere, Karan fabricated a reason to travel to Manchester that weekend. He admitted feeling hysterical trying to keep the small wedding under wraps, noting how he warned Aditya, “The only person who will open his mouth is you, if I see there is a mention of this wedding in any publication.” Reflecting back, Karan confessed to feeling hyper and panicked about maintaining the wedding’s privacy during that time when newspapers still dominated.
He revealed, “When he told me that he was getting married with 18 people attending, I panicked. I feared that if word of the wedding got out, it would be traced back to me as the only one who would reveal it. This was in April 2014 when newspapers still dominated, and 2 States was releasing. I had to lie to my mother that I had an event in Manchester to abandon the movie release, even though everyone questioned why I would leave during the release weekend. I was so anxious and hysterical, but I fabricated an excuse about having to go to Manchester.”
