Jerry Seinfeld’s comedy career experienced significant growth following his inaugural appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1981. Eight years later, he collaborated with fellow comedian Larry David to develop what would become the most successful comedy series in television history: Seinfeld. The series aired on NBC for nine seasons, garnering numerous Emmy, Golden Globe, and People’s Choice awards. In 2009, TV Guide named it the greatest television show of all time, and in 2012, a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll recognized it as the best sitcom ever.

His recent Emmy-nominated projects on Netflix include Jerry Before Seinfeld and 23 Hours to Kill, in addition to the highly praised web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Seinfeld has also taken on roles as a star, writer, and producer in films such as Comedian and Bee Movie, directed and produced a successful Broadway show (Colin Quinn Long Story Short), and authored three best-selling books (Is this Anything?, Seinlanguage, and The Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee Book), along with a children’s book titled Halloween. He is set to appear in the forthcoming comedy film, Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story, which he directed, co-wrote, and produced. Seinfeld remains active in performing both nationally and internationally.

Seinfeld’s early life and education are marked by his birth on April 29, 1954, into a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York City. His father, Kalmen Seinfeld, a sign painter originally from Hungary, had a penchant for collecting jokes he encountered during his service in World War II. His mother, Betty (née Hosni), along with her parents, Selim and Salha Hosni, were Mizrahi Jews hailing from Aleppo, Syria. Upon their immigration in 1917, their nationality was recorded as Turkish, as Syria was then part of the Ottoman Empire. Seinfeld has an elder sister named Carolyn. His great-grandmother, Salha’s mother Garez Dayan, belonged to the Dayan rabbinic lineage, which claims descent from the Medieval Exilarchs, tracing back to the Biblical King David. Additionally, Seinfeld is related to alternative metal musician and actor Evan Seinfeld as a second cousin. He spent his formative years in Massapequa, New York, where he attended Massapequa High School on Long Island. At the age of 16, he volunteered at Kibbutz Sa’ar in Israel.

Seinfeld initially enrolled at the State University of New York at Oswego but later transferred to Queens College, City University of New York, from which he earned a degree in communications and theater in 1976.
